Recently, there has been a lot of coverage on the breach that hit Apple’s developer platform. Over 275,000 accounts were stolen, including passwords and user names. But despite the apparent scope of the breach, it is only a blip on the map in comparison to other hacks.
For example, the hack of Ubuntu’s forum was recently overshadowed by the news surrounding Apple, despite the fact that no less than 1.82 million user accounts got stolen.
The most prominent and impactful hack of the past few years has to be that of Sony’s PlayStation Network, in which a whopping 77 million accounts got stolen. However, this is not nearly the largest incident in history. This dubious honor is reserved for the breach of the Heartland payment system, which involved the theft of no less than 130,000,000 user accounts. Incidentally, hacker Albert Gonzalez got 20 years for this breach in 2010.
