Let silence rule your house by blocking all outside noise with Sono

SonoYou arrive home from work. All you want to do is relax for a bit, and then suddenly the alarm goes off next door or another ambulance drives by. The only outside noise you want to hear is birds chirping, leaves rustling and other soothing natural sounds.

It was with this idea in mind that designer Rudolph Stefanich developed the Sono. This device blocks all disturbing sounds from outside using active noise cancelling. Just stick the Sono to a window, and all sirens and sounds from passing cars will disappear at the drop of a hat.

Still want to hear the birds singing in the vicinity? No problem — the Sono is able to distinguish between various types of sounds. This means the device can let particular sounds pass through if the user so desires. The Sono can also replace sounds with other sounds. For instance, if a dog is barking outside, you will hear a bird sing. In other words, you will always hear exactly what you want to hear.

Stefanich’s project is a contender for the prestigious James Dyson design award. It is still only a concept, but should the Sono win, this will provide Stefanich with the opportunity to put his idea into practice. The winner will be announced on November 7.
